Proposal: Take Two (Trivial)

In the glossary, change the "appropriate icons" definition from

"Appropriate Icons: For use in voting, a red angry face shall represent a vote AGAINST, and any of the yellow faces shall represent a vote FOR."

To

"Appropriate Icons: For use in voting, a check box shall represent a vote FOR, an X shall represent a vote AGAINST, an I shall represent a vote of IMPERIAL, and an Imperial Seal (currently ) shall represent the Imperial Veto."

and add to the bulleted list in the rule Ascension:

"
  • Create a new Imperial Seal for use in the header and as the graphic for an Imperial Veto."

Enacted by Kevan, Tuesday the 15th, 2 Points to Myke, 2 Points to Kevan
  • Friday, April 11, 2003

    Proposal : Imperial Decor [Trivial]

At any time during the 48 hours following this proposal's enactment, Myke may change the BlogNomic header image to another image of his design or choosing. Subjects are encouraged to register their opinion of the end result through the medium of Karma.

Enacted by Kevan, Tuesday the 15th, 4 Points to Kevan
    Proposal : Electroplating

[ Distinguishing this round from the previous one, a bit more... ]

Replace the word "Point" and "Points" with the word "Gold", throughout the ruleset and gamestate, except where the word refers to "Karma points", or some other inappropriate context. The Admin performing this update should correct the grammar of the new sentence, where required. (Players' Point scores will, of course, be translated into Gold scores.)

Enacted by Kevan, Tuesday the 15th, 15 Points to Kevan
    Proposal : Gamestatecraft [Trivial]

[ A very minor, boring rewording for important clarity - Gamestate should really cover things like the BlogNomic colour scheme and the Imperial Icon, which aren't "required to be stored" as such, but are regulated by the Rules all the same. If something's regulated at all, that should really be the only way to change it. ]

    In Rule 1, replace:-

"Any data which the Ruleset requires to be stored (including Proposal messages and the list of players) is considered part of the Gamestate."

    with:-

"Any information which the Ruleset allows the creation or alteration of (such as Points, or the blog colour scheme) is considered to be part of the Gamestate."

Enacted by Myke, Friday the 11th, 2 Points to Kevan, 2 Points to Myke
    Proposal: Vivid Imagery (Trivial)

In the glossary, change the "appropriate icons" definition to

"Appropriate Icons: For use in voting, a red angry face shall represent a vote AGAINST, and any of the yellow faces shall represent a vote FOR."

For use in voting, a check box may represent a vote FOR, an x may represent a vote AGAINST.

If the Proposal "Faith in the Empire" passes, also include:

"and an Imperial seal (currently ) may represent a vote of IMPERIAL."

and add to the bulleted list in the rule Ascension:

    "
  • Create a new Imperial Seal for use in the header and as the graphic for a vote of IMPERIAL."

Failed by Myke, Friday the 11th, -2 Points to Myke, 2 Points to Myke
  • Proposal: Faith in the Empire

    In the Rule "Voting", replace

"Any Player may cast their vote on a Pending Proposal by declaring it in the comments of the entry. Valid votes are FOR and AGAINST, which may be represented by appropriate icons."

    with

"Any Player may cast their vote on a Pending Proposal by declaring it in the comments of the entry. Valid votes are FOR, AGAINST, and IMPERIAL, which may be represented by appropriate icons."

    ADD the paragraph:

"A vote of IMPERIAL is a vote of no opinion, or of faith in the decision of the Emperor. The vote will count as the same as the Emperor's vote. The Emperor cannot cast a vote of IMPERIAL."

Also, add to "appropriate icons" in the glossary:

The orange face represents a vote of IMPERIAL.

[I liked the idea of Mikey voting with the Emperor when he had no opinion. This wouldn't force anybody to vote with the Emperor, but it leaves an interesting option open for someone who may have no opinion and does not want to be punished for not voting. Also, it leads the way for the concept of party voting, or representative voting.]

Enaceted by Myke, Friday the 11th, 15 Points to Myke
    Just a thought:

Doesn't it seem unfair that Admin's are able to earn more points than other players by enacting proposed rules? Emperial privileges may also allow more points to be earned by the Emperor alone...therefore making it more of a monopoly than a dynasty.

    Thursday, April 10, 2003

    Proposal: People's Favor [Trivial]

The subjects may adjust the "Favor Rating" of the Emperor to represent the collective happiness of the subjects. Subjects may move the rating one point in either direction each day.

[Looks weird to have Myke's Favor Square blank, and this can provide him with valuable feedback during his reign]

Failed by Myke, Friday the 11th, -2 Points to Mikey, 2 Points to Myke
    Proposal: Racism Buster (GameBoard)

In the first bullet of the rule "The Game Board", change the word "non-white" to "unowned."

[This wording change snuck through when the proposal "Pointlessness" passed to change buying squares into relinquishing squares. The purpose of it was to make less rich players able to afford rich players' squares. This should not apply to colored squares left over by players who have left the game. (Don.)]

Enacted by Myke, Friday the 11th, 15 Points to Myke [passed as a GameBoard proposal: GameBoard quorum is currently 2]
    Proposal: Glittering Prizes

I propose to reinstate the rule "Glittering Prizes," exactly as used and worded from the latest ruleset of the first round of the Blognomic.

Failed by Myke, Friday the 11th, -2 Points to Lyndse, 2 Points to Myke

    Proposal: Rewind, Reload

I propose to re-propose my last proposal. >^-^<

    Proposal: Quickly Multiplying Jackpot

I propose to amend Rule 17 by suggesting that all points that are fined from Players, and not just points lost due to non-vote on proposals, are collected into the BlogNomic Lottery jackpot.

[This is mostly because there are so few of us, and the quorum is so low, that it will be hard for any points at all to go into the jackpot by the end of the month.]

    Replace:

"All players who lose points due to not voting on proposals shall forfeit their points to the BlogNomic Lottery."

    With:

"All Players who are fined points shall forfeit those points to the BlogNomic Lottery."

Also, I propose that a mandatory 5 points shall start off the jackpot every month, instead of zero points.

Begin Rule 17, paragraph 3, with:

"Each month's jackpot shall begin at five points."

Enacted by Myke, Friday the 11th, 10 Points to Lyndse, 5 points to Myke

    Imperial Welcome Address

    Friends, fellow Players, and esteemed others;

It is with great surprise that I find myself issuing this address today. Did I think I would not be the first Emperor of BlogNomic? Nay, I knew it would be so. However, where I had expected several more days of claiming small point amounts, and fighting for GameBoard possession of the point-spilling monkey, I was gifted a speed-pass to the throne by one of the creators of this Nomic, Kevan.

I offer my profuse thanks to Kevan, and hope that I can continue this round with the same spirit of goodwill that lifted me to my current exalted standing.

It is my hope that this First Dynasty of Myke will be one full of cooperation, and so I encourage all of my subjects to help foster this atmosphere by creating and voting in favor of rules that would make it beneficial to find another Player in whom one can confide in and backstab plot with.

Thus, with great joy and hope for the future, do I declare the Second Round of BlogNomic, and the First Dynasty of Myke, begun!
    Proposal: Time Allocation

Rule 9 currently states: A Player may award themselves five points for the first entry they post to their weblog, for a given day (these points must be claimed within half an hour of the entry being posted).

Change to: A Player may award themselves five points for the first entry they post to their weblog, for a given day (these points must be claimed within 12 hours of the entry being posted).

[This will help put to rest the forever-annoying "posted at 12:01 and didn't notice the new day" dillema.]

Enacted by Myke, Friday the 11th, 10 Points to Noelle, 5 Points to Myke
    Proposal : Anti-Xenophobic [Trivial]

Change Rule #2 from "Any human being who maintains ..." to "Anyone who maintains ..."

[ A small change, but one I feel better represents the "inclusiveness" of BlogNomic ]

Enacted by Myke, Friday the 11th, 2 Points to Mikey, 2 Points to Myke
Proposal : Operation Nomic Liberty [Trivial]

If a Rule called "Ascension" exists, add the following bullet point to its bulleted list:-

    • They may repeal any number of rules which displease them.

[ This is doing what Myke had to do by Proposal - cutting back any Rules which have had their day, to make the game significantly different for the new Dynasty. Letting the new Emperor or Empress choose which rules get the chop seems to be an appropriate way to do it... ]

Failed by Myke, Friday the 11th, -2 Points to Kevan, 2 Points to Myke
    Proposal : Dynasty Niceness

[ Just splitting the Dynasty rule into two rules, since it really covers two different things. No actual mechanical changes beyond clarifying the vetoing. ]

Repeal the rule "Dynasties", and enact a new rule, "Dynasties"...

BlogNomic is divided into a number of Rounds, referred to as Dynasties. Each Dynasty has a single Emperor or Empress (the word "Emperor" may be taken to mean "Emperor or Empress" throughout the ruleset), and is named according to the number of times which that Player has been Emperor (eg. "The First Dynasty of Myke").

Players other than the Emperor are known as Subjects.

The Emperor may veto any Proposal. A vetoed Proposal will automatically fail 48 hours later (if it does not fail by normal means), unless 2/3 of the Subjects have objected to the veto, in that time.

Imperial Favor is a numerical rating that reflects the current Emperor's view of an individual Subject. The Emperor may update any Subject's "Imperial Favor" rating, at his or her whim. Values can be negative, positive, zero, and as large or small as the Emperor deigns. (The Emperor's Imperial Favor is always left blank.)

    Enact a new Rule, "Ascension":-

When a new Dynasty begins, its Emperor may perform the following actions within the first three days of that Dynasty:-

    • They may post an Ascension Address to the BlogNomic blog. (These addresses will be linked historically from the sidebar.)
    • They may change the BlogNomic header and color scheme to reflect their new Dynasty.

Enacted by Kevan, Wednesday the 9th, 15 Points to Kevan
    The First Dynasty of Myke

The "Dynasty" proposal has enacted, ending the first round of BlogNomic and appointing the 1200-pointed Myke as our Emperor. As specified in the Proposal, all Point scores and Karma have been set to zero, and we have a new player attribute, Imperial Favor.

It should also be noted that it's no longer possible to claim this week's Prizes, as the "Glittering Prizes" rule has been repealed.

Failed as a side-effect of the Dynasties proposal - "Any Proposals pending at the time of this proposal's enactment will be considered Failed, without penalty to the author."

    New Player

    Please Welcome Noelle to BlogNomic.

Prize: Scam (10 or 50 Points)

Player must create a post glorifying their BlogNomic achievements, and stating the number of points they currently have in BlogNomic, which must match up to their current, accurate GNDT column. If their point number is less than 1000, the Player may claim 50 points. If their point number is above or equal to 1000, the Player may claim 10 points. Prize must be claimed within 24 hours of the entry being posted, and may only be claimed once by each Player.

[I call this scam because I could have easily used it to benefit myself... in fact, I almost did. I wanted to point out the loophole in the rule, but not piss everyone off with a prize that would benefit myself alone. Also, this kind of post is cool, shouldn't violate rule 14 unless the Player mentions why they're posting it at this time, and might encourage new Players if they see we're having a good time. Also... giving Kevan a chance to catch up, as I don't want the last post to seem like I'm declaring myself Emperor... :-D]

    Proposal: Dynasty

First Player to 1200 Points wins this Round of BlogNomic. All GNDT values are reset to zero/blank.

  • Add a new rating column to the GNDT: "Imperial Favor" which follows the guidelines set in the "Dynasties" rule below.
  • Delete Rules 10, 12, and 16.
  • Any Proposals pending at the time of this proposal's enactment will be considered Failed, without penalty to the author.
  • Create a new rule: "Dynasties"
BlogNomic is divided into Rounds called Dynasties, each with a separate winning condition. When a Player fulfills the winning condition, he/she is named Emperor/Empress of BlogNomic, and the next round is begun as that Player's Dynasty. (i.e. "First Dynasty of Myke" "Third Dynasty of Kevan" etc.)

The new Emperor/Empress will post a Welcome Address to the BlogNomic blog that begins the next Round of BlogNomic, and this address will be linked to in the right sidebar column as "[# of dynasty] Dynasty of [Emperor/Empress's name] ([start date]-[finish date/'current']" above the archive section.

The Emperor/Empress will be granted the power to Veto any proposal. This Imperial Veto may be overturned by a 2/3 majority, and may not be applied to any proposal that sets the winning condition for the current Round.
The Emperor/Empress will also be permitted to change the BlogNomic header and color scheme upon their ascendency, and include the Dynastic label in the header.

Imperial Favor is a numerical rating that reflects the current Emperor/Empress's view of any other Player. The Emperor/Empress is the only Player who may update the "Imperial Favor" rating, and may do so at his/her whim. Values can be negative, positive, zero, and as large or small as the Emperor/Empress deigns. (An Emperor/Empress may not have an Imperial Favor rating themself.)

[This doesn't wipe out as much of the game as Kevan's proposal, but I think it's worth our while to keep Karma as a rating, and a few proposals after 9 have some useful clarifications. Also, Kevan's rule would delete the GameBoard, which would be a waste. As a sidenote... we might want to ask Erik to grant the other admin's access to the GameBoard to add new Player's permissions, and set up an email to be sent to all current and any new admins with access passwords.]

Enacted by Kevan, Tuesday the 8th, +10 Points to Myke, +5 Points to Kevan (although those points are immediately lost when the Proposal enacts)

[ Note that I gave Myke 33 Points before enacting this, otherwise the first paragraph would have taken effect as "Nobody wins this round yet. All GNDT scores are blanked.", which wouldn't have been very good. ]
  • Proposal: Capture the Monkey
    Gameboard Proposal

The GameBoard Monkey is worth 10 points a day per player. Any player who holds the monkey (meaning the monkey exsists on a square they own) for any part of a day may claim 10 points. The Monkey may be moved only one square by each player during their turn and only if they own a square adjacent to the monkey.

Enacted by Myke, Tuesday the 8th, +10 Points to Mikey, +5 Points to Myke
    Proposal : Endgame

[ Eh, maybe it's time to wrap the current incarnation up and start afresh. The lack of win condition makes the game feel a bit too directionless, and it's far too late to propose a useful win condition, now. I propose that we cut the ruleset back to its basics, and grow something new, giving everyone a chance to feel useful (and new players a reason to join). I also propose that Myke be declared the winner of this first Round of BlogNomic, as I think he's put the most effort in, and is clearly ahead on points.

Perhaps the best thing to have come out of BlogNomic - the Prize game - will continue. Ben and I have been discussing running it as a standalone web game; accepting prize submissions from users and vetting them to give five good ones per week, or something, and having a nice database of prizes and who's claimed them, links directly to relevant blog postings, score-tallying user profiles, and whatnot. ]

First to 1000 Points wins. Myke wins.

Repeal all Rules from 9 onwards, excluding the Glossary.

    Enact a new Rule, "Rounds":-

BlogNomic is divided into Rounds, each with a separate winning condition. When a Player meets that condition, the game stops, this Rule shall be updated to reflect their win, and any Administrator may cut the Ruleset and GameState back to an appropriate restarting point.

Round 1 saw Players being awarded Points for meeting specified, weekly criteria in their weblog postings, as well as for miscellaneous encouraged conduct in both their weblog and the game. The winner was the first to 1000 Points - Round 1 was won by Myke.

Round 2 is currently in progres. It has no win condition yet.

Remove the paragraph beginning "A BoardPlayer..." from Rule 3, "Only BoardPlayers..." from Rule 4, and "For Proposals that are designated as Gameboard Proposals..." from Rule 5.

Remove all now-unreferenced data from the Gamestate.

Failed by Myke, Tuesday the 8th, -2 Points to Kevan, +2 Points to Myke
    Proposal: The BlogNomic Lottery

If enacted, this proposal would introduce an entirely new rule to BlogNomic. I propose that the following rule be added:

    "BlogNomic Lottery:

All players who lose points due to not voting on proposals shall forfeit their points to the BlogNomic Lottery. The amount of points currently in the lottery shall be updated by an Admin each time a proposal passes or fails, and shall be posted as "This Month's Jackpot" on the right side of the page above the current week's prizes.

The admin who updates the lottery first shall be awarded two points.

The Lottery shall be drawn on the last Sunday of the current month, between noontime and midnight, and no sooner; at which point an Admin must award the player with the most Karma points at the time of drawing the jackpot. The Admin awarding the jackpot must also announce in the BlogNomic the winner of the month's Lottery in an entry beginning 'Jackpot Winner: [winner's name].'

If an Admin fails to do this during the allotted time on the last Sunday of the month, all Admins will forfeit one point to the next month's lottery. However, the Admin who awards the Jackpot first may award himself five points."

Enacted by Myke, Tuesday the 8th, 10 Points to Lyndse, 5 Points to Myke

Prize: They Call Me Mellow Yellow ( 5 points )

To get this prize, simply choose a random word (try to make it as strange of a word as you can) out of your blog entry and set the text color as "yellow." The idea is to either confuse the reader by making them think this word is somehow important, or perhaps making them think it is a link to something. Short words such as "the," "a," "an," "is," ect. DO NOT COUNT. Each player may claim this prize ten times, and may not claim it more than once per blog entry.

Don has left the game of BlogNomic.

    Quorum is 3.
    Notice to Players

You now have until 8:45pm EST tomorrow, Monday April 7, to update your Output level.
At this time, the Player with the highest and lowest Output will be awarded 20 points each.

This per the enactment of the proposal "Practical Application" which states:

"Upon the passing of this proposal, each Player will have 24 hours to calculate his/her Output. After that 24 hours, the Players with the highest and lowest Output will recieve 20 Points each."
Per Rule 2, Erik is now idle.

    Quorum drops to 3.

    Don's Magic Squares

Don currently owns 6 squares on the GameBoard. Don has -20 points. The rules concerning taking over a square owned by another player state: " claimer must first pay points equal to 1/4 of the Point score of the Square's owner, rounding up". 1/4 of -20 is -5, so any player who takes a square owned by Don GAINS 5 points. Hence, Don's Magic Squares.

For this amazing feat, which I cannot take advantage of, I award Don some serious Karma.
