Proposal: Clear Potato

I humbly submit that it is hard to tell what is going on with Hot Potatoes.
Therefore, append the following to the description of replacement:
The word(s) thus changed must be typeset in boldface.

And append the following to the description of insertion:
The addition to the Hot Potato must be typeset with underlines

And to the definition of deletion:
The word(s) deleted must be retained in the text for this iteration only, and typeset with strikethrough for the convienience of readers, but shall be considered deleted for all purposes.

Thesis: Spelling Bee, Version 12

A Disciple with higher karma is said to smell worse than any Disciple with lower karma, and as slovenliness is something all intelligent people despise, no one who smells worse than any Degenerate may Declare Victory. No Disciple's karma value may exceed the number of times the word "karma" appears in the ruleset, multiplied by 100. Karma is a signed integer defined as the sum of a Disciple's attributes, less thrice the sum of the pairwise absolute differences in eir attributes. Karma may only be recalculated on a Wednesday, but karma values must be accurate to be useable under any rule. All the sentences in this ruleset, previous to this sentence, are not to be enforced.

Confusion -- Game Contradiction

On July 19, the proposal entitled "You Can Only Walk So Far" passed. (see http://blogspot.blognomic.com/2005/07/proposal-you-can-only-walk-so-far.html ).

However, the rule change that it asserted does not appear in the rules, and there has been no proposal since then removing those rules. What gives?

Furthermore, as laid out in the above proposal, rule 17 should contain the clause "No Disciple may have a Walkvotes value greater than 3.". Cavie has 4 Walkvote, which he may not have. However, rule 17 also states that "A disciple's number of walkvotes can not be altered except by the mechanisims described in this rule." However, there is no mechanism for fixing (altering) Cavie's Walkvote number. I think the only way may be a CfJ which expressly overrules that clause of rule 17.

That's the same formula given in the Karma proposal. I like this measure of a soul, with the give and take between high values and balance. This is legal, this time..

Proposal: The Philosopher-King has left the Building

I humbly submit that the Philosopher-King has been absent from the throne for too long.

For every legal FOR vote that this Proposal has received, the Philosopher-King loses 10 in each, Gold, Honor and Knowledge.

For every legal AGAINST vote that this Proposal has received, the Philosopher-King gains 10 in each, Gold, Honor and Knowledge.

If this Proposal has been vetoed and the veto was overturned, the Philosopher-King's Gold, Honor and Knowledge are all set to 0.

Proposal: Role choices

I humbly submit that a disciple's role not rely on the choice of the Philosopher-King.

Change rule "11 - The Republic"'s text

If a Disciple has no Role, the Philosopher-King may assign them one.

To

If a Disciple has no Role, the Philosopher-King or Gadfly may assign them one. Otherwise, the Disciple may post a request for a role, with the format "Role Request: [Role]" and a body consisting of "I humbly submit that I be assigned the role of a [Role]" And then, the request shall be voted on like any other proposal.

Cross Self-Killed. Failed by Excalabur at 18:54 on the 31st of July.

Proposal: Another kind of Karma

I humbly submit that the Gadfly rule should continue into the next Dynasty with another Gadfly. Change rule 10 to read:-
There is a Disciple who is called The Gadfly. The Gadfly may perform any action that is available to the Philosopher-King, unless that action is expressly forbidden to The Gadfly.

The Gadfly uses a distinct Veto icon, which is called The Gadfly's Seal (). Each Seal icon may only be changed by its wielder.

A Disciple Voting DEFERENTIAL may indicate that e has faith in the decision of the Gadfly by using the Gadfly's Seal with eir vote icon. That vote will then be counted the same as the Gadfly's vote, if there is one, otherwise it will be considered an explicit vote of abstention.

The Philosopher-King and The Gadfly may overturn a veto imposed by the other. This may only be done if all Proposals subsequent to the one vetoed are still pending. The vetoed Proposal then reverts to pending status. Once a veto has been overturned on a Proposal, that Proposal may not be vetoed again.

The Dynasty is still considered to belong to the Philosopher-King alone, but if The Gadfly is able to achieve victory in that Dynasty, then its title is changed in the Dynastic records to bear the name of The Gadfly instead.

On a Declaration of Victory post, every Disciple may nominate any Disciple, except for the poster of the Declaration, to be The Gadfly in the next dynasty with eir vote. The Disciple with the most nominations becomes The Gadfly once the next Dynasty's Ascension address is made. (In the case of a tie for most nominations, Philosopher-King of the new dynasty must select among the tied candidates.) This rule shall then be updated to indicate the change.

Disciple Smith is The Gadfly in this Dynasty.

This rule may not be repealed at the next Ascension, but after that Ascension address is posted this sentence may be removed.

Proposal: Stocks should be fun

I humbly submit that the stock market rule is too tame to be interesting. If this proposal passes, change all occurences of the number 1 shall be changed to 10 in rule 22.

Tick Passed 5-4, timed out. Enacted by Excalabur, 31st of July at quarter to nineteen

Proposal: Consensus is Honorable

I humbly submit that the following text be appeneded to rule 11:

If a Disciple votes FOR a proposal, and that proposal passes, then the Disciple may increase their honor by 5 within 24 hours of the proposal's passage. If a Disciple votes AGAINST a proposal, and that proposal fails, then the Disciple may increase their honor by 5 within 24 hours of the proposal's failure. For the purposes of this paragraph, DEFERENTIAL votes are not considered votes.

Proposal: March of the Degenerates

I humbly submit that moral decay and anarchy are spreading in our fair city.

In rule 20 - Property add text onto each item's description, as follows:

Add to the House description:
Any Disciple whose role is Thief may ransack a House while its owner is on Walkabout. Ransacking removes the House from that owner's property and the Thief may gain 10 Gold.
Add to the Slaves description:
Any Disciple whose role is Traitor may free Slaves while its owner is on Walkabout. Freeing removes the Slaves from that owner's property and the Traitor may gain 10 Honor.
Add to the Library description (if it exists):
Any Disciple whose role is Idiot may borrow a Library while its owner is on Walkabout. Borrowing removes the Library from that owner's property and the Idiot may gain 10 Knowledge.

I humbly submit that Libraries full of parchment are tinderboxes ready to burst into flame:

Remove the Library entry from the list in rule 20 - Property

Combustable

Combustable is unidled. Let us welcome him to the Athenian Dynasty we are currently enjoying.

Combustable: If you need your GNDT password again, I can e-mail it to you. Just drop me (or any other admin) a line.

Quorum, by the way, doesn't change.

Thesis: Spelling Bee, Version 4

A Disciple with higher karma is said to spell worse than any Disciple with lower karma. No Disciple's karma value may exceed the number of times the word "karma" appears in the ruleset.

Looks like nobody's currently going on Walkabout

Let's fix that!

Proposal: Karma

I humbly submit that a measure of the merit of a soul is needed.

Add a rule entitled 'Cosmic Balance' to the ruleset, with the following text:

Define the Karma A, as: A = G+H+K - 3(|G-H| + |G-K| + |H-K|), where A can take any integer value, and G, H, and K are an entity's Gold, Honour and Knowledge respectively.

If, at any time, a Disciple's Karma exceed that of the Philosopher-King, e may declare victory. If, at any time, the Philosopher-King posts to the frontpage a post entitled "I'm bored", then the Disciple with the highest Karma who is not the Philosopher-King 100 hours after the post is made may declare victory.

Let Karma be tracked in the GNDT as a new field, automatically calculated if possible. If this is impossible, set it up as a standard text field, but this field is to be considered advisory only, with the value actually determined by the above formula.

Veto Vetoed. Failed by smith, 27th of July at 19:07.

Call for Judgment

There is discussion as to whether the following sentence contains a spelling or grammatical mistake:
This rule can be changed by anybody who can spell better then Aaron at dinner time by posting to the front page of Blognomic.
As of the time of posting, the ruleset considers it to be a spelling error, and allows this as a revision of Antithesis, Version 9.

Vote FOR this Call for Jugment if you believe that the error made was grammatical, and thus Antithesis, Version 9 should replace Antithesis, Version 10 in the ruleset, and Rodney's action to change the rule is thus legal (pending the Call for Judgment below this one).

Vote AGAINST this CfJ if you believe that the error was in spelling, and the Ruleset should remain as is; thus rendering Rodney's action moot.

Call for Judgement

As players are unable to prove whether they have eaten dinner or not, and as the eating of dinner is not covered by the Rulestate (and is thus not part of the Gamestate - ["Gamestate" is defined as any information which the Ruleset regulates the alteration of, such as Disciple's names and the blog colour scheme. - Rule 1]), any action undertaken thus far that relies upon it being dinner time must be considered illegal. Should this CfJ pass, they shall be reversed, and the following text added to the first point in the glossary:

All references to time must be either specific or defined within the ruleset to be considered achievable in the gamestate. Abstract concepts of time (e.g. "dinnertime", "twilight") cannot be achieved until they fulfil one of these criteria.

Tick Reached Quorum at 7-0. Enabled by Excalabur, 02:57 on the 27th July.

Thesis: Spelling Bee, Version 3

A Disciple with higher karma is said to spell worse than any Disciple with lower karma.

Rule change.

I, like Excalibur, have just had dinner. Rule 24, "Antithesis, Version 10" actually has the wrong text, because rule 23 says "Any of these modifications must result in proper grammatical text.". Therefore, the requirement to spell better then Aaron is gone.

I hereby change rule 24 to say "The Gadfly may declare victory."

Note that while Excalibur's action were legal they were reversed by the CFJ.

Thesis: Spelling Bee, Version 2

A Disciple with higher karma is said to spell better than any Disciple with lower karma.

Thesis: Spelling Bee, Version 1

A Disciple with higher knowledge is said to spell better than any Disciple with lower knowledge.

Call For Judgment

Excalabur has attempted to change a recent Hot Potato rule. However, his claim that he can spell better than Aaron has no basis in the rules. If this CfJ passes, Excalabur's rule change shall be undone.

Tick Reached quorum with 9 votes for, none against. Enforced 26th July at 16:25 by Excalabur

Changing rule #24

Rule 24 reads:
This rule can be changed by anybody who can spell better then Aaron at dinner time by posting to the front page of Blognomic.
Whereas I just got back from dinner, and whereas I think I can spell better than Aaron, and whereas I can thus probably spell better than Aaron at dinner time, I can thus change this rule by posting to said effect to the blog, whether you choose to read Rule 24 as applying at dinner time to those who can spell better than Aaron, or to apply always to those who can spell better than Aaron while e is having dinner.

I thus change rule 24 to read as follows:
Disciple Excalabur has won this round of Blognomic, and may thus make a Declaration of Victory at any time.

Thesis: Antithesis passes into the ruleset

as follows:

This rule can be changed by anybody who can spell better then Aaron at dinner time by posting to the front page of Blognomic.

That is all

Call For Judgment

We should extend the voting period of the pending proposals to compensate for the lack of access while Backblog was down.

If this Call for Judgment passes then any pending proposals are given 48 hours from the time of the resolution of the current Declaration of Victory, before they can be enacted or failed using the 'vote majority' method used in the case of a shortfall of votes. Other resolution methods, such as reaching quorum or self-failing, may still be used to enact or fail as normal.

Cross 5 Votes FOR, 4 AGAINST. Times out after four days, comes into effect at 02:39 the 31st of July. Unfortunately, the DoV was resolved on the 25th, so this is way outta date. I'm going to interpret this as to having no effect. If someone disagrees, let me know--Excalabur .

Backblog is back online

I just discovered Backblog comments are working again (for now). So we can get back to our normal bickering... er, I mean, playing the game.

Cayvie's Declaration of Victory needs to be decided. There aren't enough votes FOR or AGAINST to determine its legality.

I think that I could decide it, since that is a Philosopher-King power which is shared by the Gadfly, but it doesn't seem fair for the dynasty to end due to a technical problem. Aaron should process the proposals and potatoes, and veto as necessary. (I still think the DoV should be declared illegal. There was no basis for it except as an emergency game-stopping measure.)

It will be good to have www.blognomic.com to move to, where we won't have to depend on BackBlog. There are still some small issues to work out there, but it seems almost ready to go.
